Mark Russell Garrett
Mark Russell Garrett, 40, of Warren, Pa., passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 18, 2013.
Mark was born Feb. 18, 1973, in Warren, Pa., the son of Jan Russell Garrett and Karen Check-Michell.
He was a graduate of Warren High School, class of 1991, lettering in both basketball and track. Recently, he was promoted to Team Leader at Blair Corporation and had also worked at Country Fair in Pleasant Township for many years. As an on-the-side job, he refurbished pool tables and was very skilled at it. He was well known in the community for his umpiring and as a PIAA referee for softball and basketball, of which he had completed a total of 38 seasons. He was an avid pool player, hold-ing many titles and win-ning many individual and team state championships. In 2010, he was nominated for the Warren County Sports Hall of Fame. Mark had also tied 17th out of 1,579 players at the Las Vegas International 8-ball tournament in 2011.
Mark was loved by all who knew him and will al-ways be remembered for living life to the fullest. He was a huge sports fan, especially of the Baltimore Orioles and the Indianapolis Colts. Mark truly en-joyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his niece and nephews. He was a member of the Elks Club and played pool at the Eagles Club. In his spare time, he could be found playing pool, camping, fishing, kayaking, going to con-certs – especially Dream Theater and Boys to Men, and socializing with his many friends.
He is survived by his father, Jan Russell Garrett; his wife, Vicki, his mother, Karen Check-Michell, his maternal grandmother, Au-tumn “Gram” Check, his girlfriend, Brenda Ristau, two brothers: Fred Garrett and Mike Garrett, three nephews: Brendan Garrett, Michael Garrett and Matt Garrett, and one niece, Ali-cia Garrett, all from Warren, Pa.; his aunt, Juna Yingst and her husband, Charlie, his uncle, Frank “Bud” Latin, all from Harrisburg, Pa.; and many, many friends, all of which knew him as “Butch.”
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Warren “Warnie” Check; paternal grandparents, Russell H. Garrett and Sarah A. Henry-Garrett; and his aunt, Suzanne J. La-tin.
Friends will be received at the Peterson – Blick Funeral Home, Inc., 1003 Penn Ave., E., Warren, on Tuesday, from 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Penna. Ave. E., Warren, on Wednesday, May 22, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Kevin Haley, pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow at Warren County Memorial Park.
