Andrew “Andy” Jacobs Sr.
Andrew “Andy” Jacobs Sr., 92, of Sherman, N.Y., passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013, at WCA Hospital.
He was born March 14, 1921, in Silver Creek, N.Y., the son of the late Albert and Anna Kohler Jacobs.
Andy was employed by Bethlehem Steel in Lackawanna, N.Y. for 20 years, retiring in 1983.
Andy was a proud recipient of his Sherman High School diploma in 2003. He had served in the Marine Corps in World War II and the Korean War. During World War II he was in the Pacific campaign, including Guadalcanal and Tulagi landings, as well as the capture and defense of Guadalcanal and the Marshall Islands operation, and the invasion of Mid-way. During the Korean War, he was a radar instructor at Camp Lejeune. He received several medals for his dedicated service. He was a charter member of the Lakeshore Marine Corps. League in Sheridan, N.Y., a lifetime member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a former member of the Olive Lodge 575, Ismailia Shrine Drum & Bugle Corps., Moose Lodge, Silver Creek Fire Department, member of the Sherman Community Church and the Jamestown Consistory. The years in the Drum and Bugle Corps provided travel with his wife, Marilyn to many des-tinations in the United States and Canada compet-ing internationally with other bugle corps.
Andy is survived by his wife Marilyn Larson Jacobs of Sherman, N.Y., whom he married July 20. 1978; two children: Andy (Marsha) Jacobs Jr., Silver Creek, N.Y., and Anne Mucha, Fredonia, N.Y.; two step-children: Scott (Theresa) Richardson, Swarthmore, Pa., and Sherry Gulczynski, Sherman, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren and and five stepgrandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Also by his beloved cat “Sofie.”
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne Jacobs; a daughter, Alice Skellie; two brothers: Harold and Al Jacobs; and a sister, Martha Kuhlman Timmel.
A celebration of life service will be held at the convenience of the family. No visitation will be observed.
