Comedy At JSBA To Continue Friday Night
The Jamestown Savings Bank Arena is heading into its eighth week of the Wits n’ Giggles: Friday Night Comedy Series.
This week’s edition of Wits n’ Giggles will feature Steve Burr, a comedian from Rochester, as well as an opener. The show will take place in the upstairs Arena Club from 6-9 p.m.
Burr, who will headline the show, got his start in stand-up comedy by placing third in the 1994 “Funniest Person in Rochester Contest.” Since then he has performed at comedy clubs and campuses across the U.S. and Canada as well as making regular trips overseas to entertain troops in places such as Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Japan.
“The overseas shows with the military have been some of my best shows,” said Burr. “They just embrace having a show, are into it and laugh. It’s super rewarding to know that you’re providing that for them in such a rough environment so far away from home.”
Although Burr has never performed in Jamestown before, he recalls visiting the Lucy-Desi museum. But, he is looking forward to performing in a new venue, he said.
According to Burr, his style of comedy revolves around storytelling and engaging the audience in conversation.
“Most of my material comes from real-life experience – no impersonations, magic or juggling,” said Burr. “I also do a lot of chatting with the audience to try to weave everything in that way. I seem to be leaning more toward the audience lately – so maybe you could call me a conversationalist.”
The atmosphere Burr attempts to create is one where the audience feels as if they were hanging out at a party, he said.
“In dealing with the audience it keeps it fresh,” said Burr. “Your jokes are your jokes, and while they are generally new to the audience, for you it is like playing the same song over and over again. And, I’ve even gotten a lot of new jokes out of the audience that I’ve been able to carry over into other shows.”
In addition to his stand-up career, Burr is the host of his own iTunes podcast show, “3 Things You Never Talk About.” He has also traveled the country as the face of the webisode series, “Odd America.” And, he is the creator, producer and show host of the annual fundraising event, “Comics Against Cancer.”
Tickets are $8 presale and $12 the day of the show. They are available at the JSBA Box Office, 319 W. Third St. in Jamestown, by phone at 484-2624 or at jamestownarena.com.
