56 Teams Participate In NAYS Basketball Tourney
There were 56 teams from grades 5-12 that participated at the second annual North American Youth Sports Basketball Tournament (NAYS) held in Randolph recently.
Tournament director Kevin Hind noted that 36 games were played on Saturday alone, with games going from 8 a.m., until 8 p.m. that same evening.
“(I) would like to thank all of the area coaches who went out of their way to get local teams together for this tournament,” Hind said. “(I) would also like to thank the area officials for their hard work over the weekend.”
Among those participating were area squads such as Southwestern, Jamestown, Silver Creek, Dunkirk, Fredonia and Buffalo.
Following are the winners of the boys divisions.
Jamestown, which toppled Silver Creek and Southwestern to reach the finals, was the overall varsity champion, edging out Buffalo’s EBC?Elite.
EBC Elite reached the finals by virtue of its narrow, two-point victory over Randolph.
In the Jayvees bracket, the WNY Braves topped EBC Elite in the title game.
The Jayvee bracket included teams from Salamanca, Randolph, Falconer, Southwestern, Jamestown, Pioneer, Fredonia and both Pittsburgh and Buffalo area clubs.
The younger WNY Braves captured the eight-grade title over the Hoosiers (a crew from Pittsburgh), Olean bested Buffalo United in the seventh-grade tournament and the Jamestown Elite won the fifth- and sixth-grade bracket.
For the girls, both the varsity and jayvee versions of the Jamestown Elite took the crown in their respective brackets whilie Fredonia won the eighth-grade title.
Jamestown Elite’s fifth- and sixth-grade squad won as well.
