Howard, Harford Hurl Jayhawks To Sweep

CORTLAND – Lyle Howard and Jake Harford were the pitching standouts as the Jamestown Community College baseball team swept Tompkins-Cortland CC on Thursday to move into fourth place in NJCAA Region 3, Division III.

Howard pitched a three-hit shutout in the opening 3-0 win and Harford came back with a one-hitter in the nightcap’s 12-1 victory in six innings.

The win raised JCC to 14-10 in the region and 15-20 overall.

With eight games left on the schedule, JCC has twin bills with Alfred State (Saturday away and Sunday home). First pitch both days is 1 p.m. Then the Jayhawks have a doubleheader May 5 at Finger Lakes CC and on May 4 a home twin bill against Corning CC.

Howard fanned five and walked two in the first-game shutout for JCC. He faced 26 batters and had first-pitch strikes on 22 of them.

”He did an outstanding job of pitching,” said coach Dick Adams about the former Pine Valley standout.

The Jayhawks scored a run in the first as Christian VanNote tripled and Elio Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly.

In the fourth inning, Greg Marco and Josh Allen singled with one out and Jose Hernandez singled him home for a 2-0 lead.

Then in the fifth, Gonzalez walked, stole second and came in on Allen’s two-out single to complete the scoring. Connor Borowski, Hernandez and Allen stroked two hits.

In the second game, Harford tossed a one-hitter with seven strikeouts and two walks. He was helped by three double plays in the first four innings.

JCC tallied three runs in the first inning when VanNote doubled and Gonzalez singled him in. Allen and Marco followed with RBI singles,

The Jayhawks added a run in the second and third innings with Borowski tripling and Kody Kondrilk singling in the third.

A four-spot was recorded in the fourth with five hits, highlighted by Hernandez’s two-run double. The Jayhawks finished things off with three runs in the sixth with Borowski hitting a double to start the inning off.

Borowski had three hits with a double and a triple, Gonzalez swatted two doubles, Hernandez drove in three runs with two doubles and VanNote cracked a double in the win.
