Library To Host Scrabble Tourney

The James Prendergast Library will host a Scrabble tournament from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, in the Fireplace Room at the library.

Admission is $15 to benefit the library, and refreshments will also be available for sale.

“We’re very excited about the first-ever Prendergast Library Scrabble tournament,” said Tina Scott, acting library director.

There will be two 45-minute rounds, with three minutes for each turn. Players with the top 10 scores will then challenge each other in a “death round.”

There will be prizes for all 10 of the top scorers. The event is intended primarily for adults, but there is no age limit to play.

“If this is successful, we may consider hosting ‘Scrabble Junior’ in the future,” Ms. Scott said.

Interested participants may register at the information desk or mail their checks to Scrabble Tournament, Prendergast Library, 509 Cherry St., Jamestown.

The library has several circulating items about Scrabble including “The Fingertips of Duncan Dorfman,” a juvenile fiction title by Meg Wolitzer about three 12-year-olds who meet at the Youth Scrabble Tournament, and “Word Wars,” a DVD documentary that follows four Scrabble game fanatics as they advance to the North American championship.

“There are a lot of Scrabble enthusiasts in the area, and we think it’s a perfect fit for the library to center a fundraiser around this word-focused activity,” said Tom Rankin, treasurer of the library’s Board of Trustees.
