Missing Area’s PGA?Tournament

To the Readers’ Forum:

Chautauqua County was home to the Peek’n Peak Classic professional golf tournament from 2002-2007 (when the then-owner of the Peak canceled the contract with the PGA tour). Since all four days of the golf tournament were on The Golf Channel, the whole country got to see a great golf course and resort right here in Chautauqua County.

I miss that PGA-affiliated tournament and the publicity it brought to our county.

It was a thrill in 2004 to watch Bubba Watson and Kevin Stadler have a playoff for the championship. Just eight years later, Bubba Watson won the Masters and earned $4,5600,000 on the tour in 2012.

Some other famous alumni of the Peek’n Peak Classic include: Zach Johnson, who won the 2007 Masters; Jason Dufner, who won two PGA tournaments in 2012; Bill Haas, who won the 2011 Fed Ex Cup; and Brandt Snedekar.

Perhaps private sector and public sector leaders will some day bring the PGA tour and national television exposure back to Chautauqua County. We can always hope.
