Frank F. Olmstead

GERRY – Frank F. Olmstead, 87, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, April 2, 2013, in the home he built, surrounded by his family, only 200 feet from the old family homestead where he was born Nov. 16, 1925, to the late Herbert and Lillian Elwell Olmstead.

He attended Cassadaga Valley Central School.

All his life, he worked on the family farm with his father and then his son. He worked nights at Crescent Tool for 10 years. He raised mink for several years, owned and operated the Old Mill Antique Store in Gerry. In early years, he worked for Gerry Milling hauling lime, raised chickens and had an egg route that he delivered every Friday to Jamestown. Frank re-built the burnt-out Dudley D. Walters Hardware at the four corners of Gerry, which is currently Julie’s Style Station, law office and apartments.

Seventy years ago, at the age of 18, he joined the Gerry Volunteer Fire Department. He served as third assistant fire chief in 1957 and 1958, president in 1987, and worked for many years at the Gerry Rodeo. Frank is also a member of the Chautauqua County Antique Tractor Association, Jamestown Pistol Club, Jamestown Elks, Ellington Rod and Gun Club, where he served on the board of directors and as a range officer.

Frank enjoyed working on old tractors and engines, going to auctions, flea market and household sales. He could fix or repair anything, and was the original picker. He could find arrowheads in any field or treasures with his metal detector. He also enjoyed making maple syrup, apple cider, loved watching the birds, playing poker with “the guys” and hunting since 16 years old. He was the cornerstone of his family.

Husband of Patricia A. Barmore Olmstead, whom he married Nov. 17, 1985, and the late Margy Paplow Olmstead, whom he married Oct. 18, 1947, and who passed away Nov. 14, 1980; father of Cynthia (Ken Asel) Scarborough, Rebecca (David) Conroe, Frank (Jennifer Mikula) Olmstead II, all of Gerry and Dianna (Marcus) Kuehn of Las Vegas, Nev.; stepfather of Julie (Alex Trowbridge) Prittie and Alan (Wendy Cobb) Prittie, all of Gerry, and Keith (Sherry) Prittie of Maple Springs; grandfather of David (Kristen) and Danielle (Sean Fenton) Conroe, Steven (Heidi) Cooper, Travis (Julia) and Tanner Olmstead, Jennifer (Jason) Morrison and Lillian (Matt) Keeler; step-grandfather of Jason (Richelle Rose), Alycia and Jasmine Prittie; great-grandfather of Garrett Conroe, Ava and Brody Fenton, Christian, Connor and Emma Cooper, Payton Morrison, Karson Keeler and “one in the oven”; step-great-grandfather of Gemini and Colton Prittie; brother of the late Pearl Anderson; brother-in-law of Betty Truesdell of Alexandria Bay, Denny (Linda) Barmore of Gerry, and Rick (Katie) Barmore of Melbourne, Fla.
