Please Watch Out For School Buses

To The Reader’s Forum:

“It’s big; it’s yellow; and has flashing lights. What can’t people see?

I am a bus driver for the Cassadaga Valley School and one of the roads that I drive on is Route 60, every day dropping off my precious cargo along the way. This an issue that all school bus drivers deal with on a daily basis and it angers me so bad that day after day I see so many careless people that have no regard for safety and that motorists constantly drive through my red lights while I am trying to keep all of these kids safe. The yellow lights are not a signal to speed up and get past that bus; the yellow lights are a warning that the bus is going to stop soon. Then the red lights come on and that means STOP. Even though it is the law, this seems like a concept that is so difficult for some people to understand.

How would you like it if your child, grandchild or a loved one was getting off my bus or any bus and you were the one that was in too big of a hurry to stop or were the one that was distracted by your cell phone or radio and wasn’t paying attention to what was going on and you just jeopardized that kid(s) life. Remember that is someone’s child, grandchild or loved one getting off that bus.

If you do meet a bus please remember it only takes a short time for the students to load or unload. If you do get behind a school bus please be patient, most of us will try to pull over as soon as it is safe to do so, to allow vehicles to get by.

I believe I am asking on behalf of all school bus drivers to please pay attention, also to allow yourself a little more time when you are on the road; someone’s life is depending on it.
