City Man Charged After Trying To Rob Falconer Tops Location

FALCONER – Quick action from a Tops Friendly Markets employee in Falconer stopped a Jamestown man from robbing the store late Thursday night.

James M. Hayes, 22, of 115 Wilson Place, Jamestown, was charged with third-degree robbery and petit larceny Thursday. According to a police report, Ellicott police were dispatched to the Tops store on South Work Street, Falconer, after a robbery in progress was reported. Officers arrived at the store to find the robber had been caught by a store employee and a customer in the store parking lot.

Hayes allegedly went into the store’s pharmacy and handed the clerk a note demanding several narcotic medications. The clerk complied with Hayes’ demands. When Hayes left the store, the clerk told another store employee before Hayes could get away.

Hayes was arraigned in Poland Town Court and taken to the Chautauqua County Jail. He will be in court later.
