Changes Could Be Coming To Sewer District
MAYVILLE – There could be some changes coming to the Portland, Pomfret, Dunkirk Sewer District if approved by the full legislature this week.
Both the Public Facilities and Audit and Control Committees recently heard a resolution which makes changes to the sewer district. The changes would bring the Portland, Pomfret, Dunkirk district in line with other sewer districts.
Rates would increase from $2.75 per thousand gallons used to $5.50 per thousand gallons. The rate increase will help necessary repairs to be made to portions of the sewer line.
“They need to make a substantial increase,” said Steve Abdella, county attorney. “What they’ve decided to do is change very little the actual per unit charge in respect to the usage, and instead have the bulk of the increase reflected in the actual per gallon rate. Those who are using more will pay more. That may also encourage people to conserve.”
Depending on water usage, the estimated proposed annual cost for a typical single-family household within the district, combining usage and unit charges, is: For the Van Buren Point area, $846 for a year-round resident using 72,000 gallons; $648 for the average resident using $36,000; and $549 for a seasonal resident using 18,000 gallons.
For Shore Acres residences, it would be $751 for a year-round resident using 72,000 gallons; $553 for the average resident using $36,000; and $454 for a seasonal resident using 18,000 gallons.
For all others in that sewer district, it would be $712 for a year-round resident using 72,000 gallons; $514 for the average resident using $36,000; and $415 for a seasonal resident using 18,000 gallons.
The increase is estimated to be around $200 per year for a year-round customer.
Both committees unanimously approved the increase.
Additionally, both committees approved a resolution authorizing repairs for the Portland, Pomfret, Dunkirk sewer district. Abdella said, typically, a bond would cover the expenses. However, since the amount is so low, the money is going to be borrowed from the county’s reserve.
The repairs are going to be made to the sewer district’s pumping stations. The money will be borrowed from the County’s Capital Reserve Fund. The cost for the project will be $250,000. The total amount will be paid back at a rate of 2.5 percent over 10 years.
Both committees also unanimously approved the project.
