Hospitalist Speaks To Noon Rotary
Dr. Leia Sykes, a hospitalist working at WCA Hospital, recently spoke about her field of medicine at a Jamestown Noon Rotary Club at the Jackson Center in Jamestown.
Dr. Sykes earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto and a masters degree and Doctor of Medicine from St. George’s University School in Grenada, West Indies. She previously worked at the Carilion Clinic at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicines prior to accepting her position at WCA.
While at Carilion, Dr. Sykes was named Intern of the Year in 2009, Resident of the Year in 2011 and Chief Resident in Internal Medicine in 2010-11.
Dr. Sykes is married, with a 1-year-old son, and the couple is expecting another child in April. She speaks, reads and writes French; is a member of the Royal Conservatory of Music for Piano and is a certified personal trainer. Dr. Sykes captained the University of Toronto track and field team and received the Clara Benson Award for outstanding ability in scholarships and athletics in 2003.
Dr. Sykes and her husband feel that Jamestown is the best place for them to be and they are happy that they made the decision to move here. Her parents and siblings reside in nearby Toronto. Her husband is a New York state-certified teacher. After training with a hospitalist focus in her residency, she explained, she searched for a hospital that provides a high quality of service in a kind community. She said that they found all these positive attributes in Jamestown and WCA Hospital.
Dr. Sykes works within a team of seven hospitalists at WCA Hospital. A group of three hospitalists work seven days in a row for 12 days. A second group of three hospitalist physicians work the next seven days. The seventh hospitalist works the overnight shift. Their patients are typically admitted through the emergency room or a primary care office and are treated by the hospitalists during their stays at WCA.
The Jamestown Noon Rotary Club is a community service organization which meets at noon Mondays, in the Robert H. Jackson Center Banquet Room on East Fourth Street, Jamestown.
