Cecil J. Rhodes

Cecil J. Rhodes, 80, of 4977 Marshall Ave., Bemus Point, died at 9:54 p.m. Saturday (March 16, 2013) in WCA Hospital.

He was born March 28, 1932, in Jamestown, the son of the late Cecil L. and Elsa M. Nordstrand Rhodes.

A 1950 graduate of the Bemus Point High School, he was president of his class and was the recipient of the first New York State Regents Scholarship awarded at the school. He was also a graduate of Pratt Institute of Brooklyn, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in industrial design, and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, where he received his teaching certificate.

Prior to retiring, he had been employed as an art teacher at Maple Grove High School, and during the summer months, had worked at LS Aero Marine and Chautauqua Brick Company, both in Bemus Point. In earlier years he had been a partner in Weissbarton and Rhodes in New York City, a firm that was involved in the design and construction of offices and showrooms for the garment industry. He had also been employed by Arthur Wagner and Associates, Affrime and Associates, and Rex the Florist in Falconer.

An accomplished artist, he originated the woodscape technique, for which he was widely known. He also enjoyed sailing and sports cars.

Surviving are a brother, David B. (Louise) Rhodes of Jamestown; two aunts: Marge Nordstrand of Jamestown and June Carroll of Youngsville, Pa.; cousins: Kaaren (Allen) Swanson, Kathy Levandowski and Tim (Betty) Rhodes, all of Jamestown, Daniel (Diane) Rhodes of Chicago; Lewis Mayer and Barbara Fryover of Rochester, and Judy Carroll of Youngsville, Pa.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Rhodes Young.

At Cecil’s request, there will be no funeral service or visitation. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date to be announced. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery. To send a message to the family, visit www.presentsixbeyfuneral.com.
