Duane Swan

Duane “Dewey” Swan, 82, passed away March 1, 2013, at his Florida home with his wife Elsie by his side.

Dewey was born in Jamestown, N.Y., on Sept. 30, 1930, the son of Harry and Emma Swan.

He lived in Jensen Beach, Fla., during the winter months, and spring and summer at his home on Chautauqua Lake in Lakewood, N.Y.

Dewey graduated in 1949 from Jamestown High School. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps, serving during the Korean War. He graduated from Albany College of Pharmacy in 1960 and was co-owner of Ruslink Drug Store, retiring in 1984.

Dewey was a member of the American Legion and the Rod & Gun Club. He was a past member of the Thule and Viking Lodge. Dewey enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing, boating and walking the beach. He also enjoyed playing the trumpet and organ, but most of all taking trips to visit his children and their families.

Dewey attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Jensen Beach and the Zion Covenant Church of Jamestown.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Hjelm of 61 years; four sons: Scott of Stuart, Fla., Steven (Carm) of Titusville, Fla., Randy (Cheryl) of Asheville, N.C., and Dr. Thomas (Pam) Swan of Minneapolis, Minn.; brother, Floyd Swan of Youngstown, Ohio; sisters: Helen Gustafson of Jamestown, Florence Carlson of Youngstown, Ohio, and Marian Applequist of Tiffin, Ohio; 11 grandchildren: Emilie, Alyisa, Allyson, Andrea, Leah, Sophia, Annelise, Jakob, Sammy, Joshua and Zackery; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Noyd.

There will be a memorial held at Holiday Out at the Chapel by the Sea at Jensen Beach, Fla.
