Jobless Rate Hits Double Digits

The unemployment rate in Chautauqua County is above 10 percent.

According to the state Labor Department, the county’s January unemployment rate is 10.1 percent, which is 1.2 percent higher than what it was in December 2012. The rate is .7 percent higher than what it was a year ago when it was 9.4 percent.

The job sector with the largest decrease in employment occurred within natural resources, mining and construction, which dropped 10 percent. Financial activities decreased by 7.1 percent, government lowered by 6.3 percent, leisure and hospitality dropped by 5.8 percent and manufacturing lost 5 percent of its jobs. The only job sector in January that gained employees was professional and business services, which increased by 6.9 percent.

The number of employed decreased by 800 jobs, falling from 56,600 in December 2012 to 55,800 in January. The number of unemployed increased by 800, going from 5,500 in December 2012 to 6,300 in January.

New York state’s overall economy added 29,600 jobs in January, breaking a record with 17 consecutive months of private sector jobs added. Between December 2012 and January, the state’s unemployment rate rose from 8.2 percent to 8.4 percent. The private sector job count is based on a payroll survey of 18,000 New York employers conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“New York state’s strong economy continues to grow in 2013 and is setting records for consecutive job growth. In January, the state’s private sector job count increased by 29,600, accounting for nearly one in five jobs created in the nation,” said Bohdan M. Wynnyk, state Division of Research and Statistics deputy director.

The New York state job sector with the largest increase in employment since January 2012 was in professional and business services, which rose by 32,900. Educational and health services went up by 32,400 jobs.

The job sector which decreased employment the most was government, which dropped by 11,800 jobs. The manufacturing sector also decreased, losing 9,500 employees since last year.
