Our Residents Have The Biggest Hearts

To The Reader’s Forum:

Once again this area proved that despite poor economic conditions, our residents have some of the biggest hearts anywhere as they respond enthusiastically to the needs of others. This was vividly demonstrated this past weekend as approximately 1,000 people attended the benefit spaghetti dinner for the Gerry Volunteer Fire Department’s fire chief, Carl Fransen, who is being treated for Stage 4 colon cancer.

The “Friends of Carl Fransen” committee wishes to thank the many volunteers who made this event possible as well as the dozens of area merchants and businesses who donated food items for the dinner. In addition, individuals and merchants provided nearly 250 items for the Chinese auction. Appreciation also goes to the local newspapers and radio stations for their work in promoting this event.

The 34-year-old Fransen, who has been Gerry’s fire chief for ten years, is presently receiving chemotherapy treatments, and money raised by the benefit will be used for medical expenses and a trust fund for his two children.

Thanks again to all,

Bruce Gustafson
