Horseshoe Inn To Host St. Patrick’s Day Cemetery Fundraiser

Area residents in search of something to do on St. Patrick’s Day can travel to Onoville for an answer.

The Horseshoe Inn will be holding the first annual Friends of St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. The event will include commemorative T-shirt sales, karaoke, a silent auction, and corned beef and cabbage, with all proceeds going to the ongoing restoration efforts at cemetery.

According to Gary Olson, chairman of the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery Restoration Committee, the project to restore the cemetery grounds began several years ago.

“I’m happy to report that interest in, and commitment to, this worthwhile community project continues to grow,” said Olson. “Through the good will and volunteer efforts of community members, our goals are beginning to be realized.”

The cemetery, located in Guernsey Hollow, has been featured on several websites for its supposed hauntings, but over the decades it has fallen into disrepair. After being used as a party spot by area residents and being visited by those interested in its history as a hotspot for paranormal activity, Olson, along with the many volunteers involved in its restoration, are looking to bring the cemetery back to its original glory.

Officials from the South Valley community were contacted regarding the restoration project and have given input on plans to the volunteers. The forest that once obscured the cemetery from the road has been removed, fresh fill has been brought in to be seeded for a lawn and new security signs have been installed, thanks to the time, help and materials that were donated by local residents and businesses.

The funds raised during Sunday’s event will be used to further restore the cemetery by repairing the fence, re-setting gravestones, creating and installing a new cemetery monument, installing a new flagpole, creating a paved driveway with parking spaces, and installing new security measures on the property. The cemetery is expected to be rededicated in August 2013.
