Howard Hurls Jayhawks To First Victory

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman Lyle Howard from Pine Valley Central School pitched Jamestown Community College to its first win of the baseball season at the Ripken Experience on Thursday morning.

Howard was brilliant as he allowed Arcilla College (2-4) just two hits while fanning six and walking just one in an 8-1 victory that was JCC’s first win after nine defeats.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander was working on a shutout until the last inning when Arcilla tallied an unearned run.

The hitting was supplied by Kody Kondrik with two singles and two RBIs on sacrifice flies, Christian Van Note had two hits with a triple and Levi Madden a double among JCC’s nine hits.

JCC (1-10) scored one run each in the third, fourth and fifth innings and added five in the seventh inning to break it open.

In the second half of the twin bill, JCC trailed in the first inning, 5-0, and lost by a 5-4 margin to Delaware Tech.

Only two of the runs were earned off losing pitcher Jake Harford, who went 6 innings and allowed five hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Van Note followed in relief and fanned one.

JCC scored its four runs in the fourth on three hits and two errors. Elio Gonzalez had an RBI double, Kondrik an RBI single and Van Note a double among the Jayhawks’ five hits.

On Wednesday, JCC lost to Northampton CC of Bethlehem, Pa (6-3), 6-0.

Matt Fowler was the standout pitcher for JCC as he relieved losing pitcher Tom Hearst after the first inning and threw six innings of shutout ball. He allowed just four hits with no walks.

North Hampton’s first inning was highlighted by Colby Kulig’s grand-slam. Kyle Farnholtz tossed a three-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks in going the distance for the win.

For JCC, Gonzalez had a double and Van Note and Connor Borowski each had a single.

JCC is idle until Tuesday when it travels to Butler County CC for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
