Arlene R. Schemerhorn
GERRY – Arlene R. Schemerhorn, 89, formerly of Olean, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Heritage Village, Gerry.
She was born Jan. 5, 1924, in Olean, the daughter of the late John and Clarissa Crowles Joy.
A full-time homemaker, she cared for more than 55 foster children over the years.
She was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Olean for more than 70 years, Electra Chapter 84 Order of the Eastern Star Olean, Olean Court 19 Royal Order of Amaranth, Hannah Shrine 26 White Shrine of Jerusalem Olean Senior League and town of Olean Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.
Arlene loved playing bingo and would travel about Olean to wherever it was played. She loved her family and enjoyed her grandchildren very much. Later, it was her great-grandchildren that were her joy and in the last few years it has brought her joy to be visited by her four great-great-grandchildren which left her all smiles.
Wife of 48 years to the late Paul Schemerhorn; mother of the late Janice P. Evans and Timothy Gould; foster mother of David Stafford of Gowanda; grandmother of Rhonda (Bill) Johnson and Lynn (David) Austin, all of Sinclairville; great-grandmother of Layla Knight of Kennedy, and La Toyia Knight of Gerry; great-great-grandmother of Javonte Hackett of Gerry, MiKayla, Jorden and Mason Carlson, all of Kennedy; sister of the late Hazel Gramham, Geraldine Cornell, Margaret Ewing, Ralph, John, Robert and Alfred Joy; mother-in-law of Duane P. Evans Sr. of Ohio. Also survived by nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are private. Memorials to Heritage Village or Hospice Chautauqua County.
