Lakers Win Bantam Title On Zwieg’s OT Goal

CHEEKTOWAGA – The Jamestown Lakers Bantam hockey team won the Western New York Amateur League Bantam Mixed Division championship on Sunday night by defeating top-seeded West Seneca, 4-3, in overtime.

To earn a berth in the championship game, second-seeded Lakers, after a first round bye, edged the Niagara Junior Purple Eagles 2-1 in semifinal action the week before. After a scoreless first period in that game, Trevor Dykstra recorded the Lakers’ first goal off a rebound at close range with assists going to Joey Gerace and Michael Mammoser.

Niagara’s Charles Cetola tied it at 1-1 early in the third period converting from Colin Szanyi.

Mammoser scored the game winner late in the third period for the Lakers off a pass from Griffin Noon.

Ryan Pascarella recorded the win in goal.

The Lakers prevailed in the championship game behind the goaltending of Pascarella.

West Seneca’s R. Krzykowski scored unassisted and M. Rindfleisch tallied from E. Shanley to end the first period with Jamestown down by two goals.

Thirty-five seconds into the second period, Gerace scored for the Lakers from Mammoser and Jacob Zwieg.

West Seneca took a 3-1 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the third period after A. Huff scored from C. Peters.

Gerace then recorded his second goal of the game unassisted with 8:30 left in the third to cut the Lakers’ deficit to one.

Twenty-five seconds later, Zwieg tied it at 3 after a slapshot from the right faceoff circle found the back of the net. Tommy Muecke got the assist.

Regulation ended at the 3-3 tie to put the game into a 10-minute overtime period. Forty-nine seconds into the overtime period, Zwieg scored the game winner with assists from Gerace and Mammoser.
