SW/MG Loses Twice In State Tournament

Southwestern/Maple Grove lost a pair of hockey games in the first day of the Western New York High School State Club Tournament at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena on Friday.

Southwestern/Maple Grove absorbed defeats of 4-3 to St. Joseph’s and 6-3 to Canisius to fall to 0-2 with a 4 p.m. game scheduled today.

Tyler Chase, Alex Carlson and Andrew Farnham scored the Southwestern/Maple Grove goals against St. Joe’s. Carlson, Branden Decker, Nate Stephens and Ryan Schutte had assists.

For St. Joe’s, Brendan Hurley, Connor McKenna, Matthew Ruggerio and Joe Todaro recorded the goals. Ruggerio, Ted Benz and McKenna had the assists.

Alexander Carlson had a goal and two assists for SW/MG against Canisius while Farnham had a goal and an assist and Curtis Carlson a goal.

Noah Weinstein was in the Southwestern/Maple Grove net for both games.

Zach Grace and Pat Leary scored two goals for Canisius while Frank Downing and Mike Piscatelli with one each,

Pat Gates led in assists with four, Joe Mancuso, Joe Anain, Alex Carlson, Grace, Piscatelli added an assist for the winners.

Starpoint defeated St. Joe’s, 4-2, as Andrew Parrish scored twice while Brian Klementowski and Christian Nati scored once.

Zachary Stanley produced two assists and Andrew Townsend and Nati one in the win.

Anthony Carbone and Hurley tallied for St. Joe’s while Anthony Pontello, Jacob Kopacz and McKenna earned assists for St. Joe’s.

East Williston/Jericho downed Starpoint, 5-2, with Sam Tannebaum having a hat trick.

Adam Fox had a goal and four assists and Justin Breslin had a goal and an assist.

Andrew Fox chipped in with two assists for the winners.

Justin Thompson and Zachary Stanley recorded goals for Starpoint with Thompson assisting. Other assists went to Andrew Parrish, Patrick Milinski and Nati.

Michael Maldraro had two goals and an assist, Matthew Cich, Andrew Slawiak and Austin Junik added goals as Cleveland Hill/JFK edged Massapequa, 5-2.

Slawiak, Junik and Mike Nunn contributed assists in the win.

Brett Ansbacher and James Jiritano scored goals in defeat with Ansbacher, Robert Croes and Gearard O’Donnell picking up assists.

Cheektowaga and Canisius battled to a 3-3 tie with Piscatelli scoring all three goals for Canisius.

Kris Kallas and Ethan Finn split four assists and Frank Downing had one for Canisius.

For Cheektowaga, Mike Crissy scored from Jordan Pocohello, Kyle Ponosny from Randy Szymkowiak and Chris Botzenhart and Szymkowiak from Pocohello.
