Hanson Sign Companies Names New President
FALCONER – Excited is how Brett Aversa explained his feelings on being the new president of Hanson Sign Companies.
Aversa was the business’s general manager and vice president for the last 10 years.
“I started working here part-time in 1988 and full-time in 1993,” he said. “I started working in the shop. I’ve done everything we do from sandblasting to screen printing.”
Aversa said his father, Gene, purchased the company in 1988 when it was still located along Prendergast Avenue in Jamestown. The business was founded in 1949 by Bob Hanson. In 1997, company officials moved to Falconer, where it is still located today at 82 Carter St.
“Annual sales when my father bought the company was around $100,000. At the end of last year, we were over $4 million,” Aversa said.
The new president said he is looking forward to the challenge. He enjoys the diversity of the signs the business produces. The business does national sign work, which includes clients like Edward Jones, H&R Block and Dish Network.
Aversa, who is following his father as president, said he doesn’t feel any added stress following in his father’s footsteps.
“I don’t feel any added pressure working for him. It is the only way I know how to work,” he said. “It took years for me to learn his expectations for me, which are higher because I’m his son. But that is fine with me.”
Aversa is a Jamestown High School graduate. He attended Jamestown Community College before graduating from Ohio University. He credits his success to his wife, Amy, and his three sons, Jake, Nate and Alex.
“I’m not pushing them into the business,” he said about his children. “If they have a dream, I want them to follow it.”
Aversa said he likes working with his employees on projects. He said most of them have been with the company 10 to 20 years.
“It is nice to get to know them and their families. It is neat because it doesn’t end,” he said about the longevity of his employees. “There is nothing we ask our people to do I haven’t done. I’m big on empowering the employees, and I manage them to grow and do things better. I can’t do it all myself.”
The company has 37 employees. For more information, call 661-3900 or visit www.hansonsign.com.
