Area residents got a taste of wholesome, organic, locally-sourced food and homegrown jazz at The Corner Coffeehouse and Bistro Friday evening.
Every Thursday through Saturday people flock to Frewsburg to enjoy an eclectic dining and musical experience provided by Joseph Glarner, owner of the Corner Coffeehouse, and his friendly staff.
According to Glarner, the atmosphere he is trying to create is best described as casual gourmet. That’s why he decided to go with a coffeehouse as his venue.
“We want people to come in as they are and not feel like they have to doll up and get a suit on,” said Glarner. “It’s different than anything in the region because we’ve got live jazz a couple nights a week, we show indie movies and we serve fresh gourmet made-to-order food. It’s geared towards people who want eclectic, quality music without the bar scene. It gives people a place they can go that’s family friendly and that puts a lot of love into the food.”
Part of the love that Glarner spoke of resides in the fact that the pasta served at The Corner Coffeehouse is made-to-order. The pasta is as good as it gets in Italy, said Glarner.
“We actually had a couple ladies in from Milano, Italy, who were giving me kisses after having the baked carbonara because they said they don’t even get pasta that good in Italy,” said Glarner.
But, good food isn’t nearly enough for Glarner; because to him, the dining experience isn’t complete without something to tap your feet to. Glarner said he is very proud of the quality of musicians he is able to consistently bring to the coffeehouse.
Each Thursday, Friday and Saturday night Glarner hosts area musicians, both union and not union, such as Stan Barton, father of Amanda Barton, who performs jazz mandolin, violin and sings at the coffeehouse.
“The Corner Coffeehouse is a wonderful place,” said Barton. “Joe has turned this into a jazz cafe with music on a regular basis. It’s a great spot, with good food, a great atmosphere and is a nice cut-above in the country.”
On Friday evening Barton was accompanied by Steve Davis, Infinity Performing Arts instructor, on piano. Barton said Davis makes him sound like a million bucks.
“Stan is great. It’s not everyday that you find the right type of spirit and I just really enjoy playing with him,” said Davis. “He knows his material and he really loves it. He tells stories and you can hear his experiences through his voice and his violin.
“Joe is also a great friend of mine and it’s crazy that he has such a well-respected establishment,” he continued. “I met him through playing music at his recording studio, so he wears so many different hats. He is great to have in this community because he provides so many outlets for so many different people. It’s really cool to see this place grow from the ground up and I can’t lie, the food is good. It’s cool to see a good friend of mine do so well in so many areas of life.”
The current lineup of musicians includes: Thursdays with Pete Pepke and Andrea and The Giants from 6-8 p.m.; Fridays with Stan Barton from 6-8 p.m.; and Saturdays with artists such as Davis and Eng Jazz N’ Blues from 6-8 p.m.
