Investigation Continues Into Inmate Death

A man died after being shot with a stun gun by Jamestown police Saturday, the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

An autopsy was performed on Charles Baker Jr., 30, of Jamestown, at the Erie County Medical Center.

Baker was arrested Saturday afternoon by the Jamestown Police Department and taken to police headquarters. While being processed, an altercation occurred resulting in Baker being tasered by police, the district attorney’s office said.

Approximately two hours later, Baker had a seizure and was transported to WCA Hospital. The Jamestown man was responsive at the hospital but later passed away.

Baker was initially found with what was thought to be a “considerable amount of cocaine,” the district attorney’s office said. Jamestown police have been cooperating with David Foley, county district attorney.

“I have instructed my investigator to collect all the information from the Jamestown Police Department, including any video footage of the initial encounter in the department,” Foley said. “We will await the autopsy results before any decisions can be made on how to proceed.”
