Laverne B. “Bud” Scriven
MAYVILLE – Laverne B. “Bud” Scriven, 88, formerly of 6169 Elm Flat Road, Mayville, died Friday (Feb. 8, 2013) at the Chautauqua County Home in Dunkirk.
He was born Oct. 17, 1924, in Hartfield, the son of the late Burton and Zelda Goodrich Scriven.
Bud was a graduate of Mayville Central School, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. He had been an industrial insulator for Asbestos Workers Local 4 of Buffalo, N.Y.
He was a former member of the former Hartfield United Methodist Church, a member of Lake Chautauqua Memorial Post VFW in Mayville, Mayville American Legion, Peacock Masonic Lodge in Mayville, and the Jamestown Consistory.
Bud loved farming, collecting guns, cars, and he was an old-fashioned “horse trader” he enjoyed trading and swapping several different items such as horses, cars and tractors.
He is survived by four sons: Randy B. (Nancy) Scriven of Westfield, Brian J. (Sue) Scriven of Portageville, N.Y., Clark D. (Janice) Scriven of Dewittville and Grant A. (Loretta) Scriven of Lewiston, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren: Kristy Cino of Stow, Ohio, Nathan Scriven of Westfield, Kendra Keefe of Mayville, Michael Martin of Dewittville, Richard Martin of Laurel, Md., Brittany Wojnar of Lancaster, Tiffany VanDerBeck of East Aurora, Jeremya Scriven of Conesus, N.Y., Justin Scriven of Conesus, N.Y., Alexis Scriven of Lewiston, Tyler Scriven of Lewiston, Josh Alan Moore of Mayville and Ashley Marie Moore of Mayville; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian Standish Scriven, whom he married March 4, 1948, in North East, Pa., and who died July 21, 2007; an infant brother; and a sister, Winifred Rosage.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Freay Funeral Home, Mayville. The Rev Mark Parsons of the Dewittville-Hartfield United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
