Date Announced For Correctional Officer Exams

New York state Sen. Catharine Young (R, C, I-Olean) and Assemblyman Andy Goodell (R, C, I-Chautauqua County) joined the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision in announcing that a New York state Department of Civil Service test will be administered on Saturday, April 13, as part of a correction officer recruitment effort.

The deadline for filing for the examination is Monday, Feb. 25. The exam for this position is designed for both English and Spanish-speaking applicants, and will be given statewide.

To qualify, those interested must be 21 years or older, a U.S. citizen, resident of New York and possess a high school diploma or GED. Applicants must also have passed medical and psychological screenings, as well as a background investigation. A felony conviction automatically disqualifies anyone from eligibility, while misdemeanor convictions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

“I encourage anyone interested in a career as a correction officer to take the test,” said Young. “Visit the website, gather information and see if it might be a good fit. This could be a tremendous opportunity for someone who is looking for a career change or still searching for a good-paying job.”

“State correctional personnel provide our residents with an invaluable service,” said Goodell. “Correction officers serve our community in a very important capacity. It is a tremendously fulfilling career, compensated at a competitive salary. I encourage qualified residents to apply as soon as possible before (this) month’s deadline.”

A correction officer trainee starts with a salary of $39,014 per year. After one year of a successful correction officer traineeship, that salary can increase to $46,990 per year.

Information on the test can be found at the Department of Civil Service’s website at www.cs.ny.gov/exams. From there, interested parties can apply or download examination information or applications.
