Rotary Exchange Team To Visit Philippines

In October of 2012, Rotary District 7090 hosted a Group Study Exchange Team from the Manila District of the Philippines (District 3800).

In February, a Group Study Exchange Team from District 7090 will reciprocate the visit to the Philippines.

Group Study Exchange team members will participate in four primary activities; vocational and cultural exchange, fellowship and Rotary involvement. The team consists of four non-Rotarian business/professional people and a Rotarian team leader.

The outgoing GSE Team will leave for the Philippines on Feb. 15 and will visit fellow Rotarians in the District of Manila until March 15. The team includes Jessica Manuel, sponsored by the St. Catharine’s Rotary Club; Kristen Smith, sponsored by the St. Catharine’s South Rotary Club; Sherry Kerr, team leader and a member of the Brantford Rotary Club; Michelle Sass, sponsored by the Brantford Rotary Club; Megan MacLeod, sponsored by the Buffalo Rotary Club.

Kerr, who is the executive director of Participation House Brantford, said says she ‘is very excited about being chosen to represent the district and lead this “team of extraordinary women who are all looking forward to an extraordinary adventure.” Prior to being selected in November to represent District 7090, the five ladies did not know each other. They have been working together since then to prepare to spend a month in the Philippines to both share and gain knowledge and experience from opposite sides of the world.

District 7090 has 70 Rotary Clubs, 40 in the north western part of New York State, United States and 30 in Southern Ontario, Canada. The district is known as the Best of Friends District with close to 2,600 Rotarians.

Rotary International is made up of more than 34,000 clubs worldwide, with find members volunteering in communities at home and abroad to support education and job training, provide clean water, combat hunger, improve health and sanitation and to eradicate polio.

Rotary International has supported District Clubs to participate in these exchanges for many years. This year marks the last Group Study Exchange that Rotary International will sponsor. With changes to the program, a new program will begin in 2013.
