Eklum Records Upset, Knocks Off Top Seed In Class AA

LOCKPORT – Zach Eklum of Jamestown got a chance to go against the top seed Ryan Schlager of Clarence for the first time and the Red Raider made the most of it Saturday in the Section 6 Class AA Tournament at Lockport High School.

Eklum, the second seed from Jamestown, upset Schlager, 11-2, and won the 182-pound wrestling championship as the Red Raiders came in third with 133 points.

Clarence captured the title with 228 points followed by Lockport with 193 points. Kenmore West was fourth with 129 points, West Seneca West fifth with 122 points and Lancaster sixth with 114.5 points.

Rounding out the 12-team field were Niagara Falls with 114.5 points, Niagara Wheatfield with 99 points, Williamsville North with 72.5 points, Orchard Park with 71 points, Frontier with 63 points and North Tonawanda with 34.5 points.

Mike Southwick wasn’t as fortunate as teammate Eklum as he lost to top seed Nate Schwab of Clarence, 6-3, in the 160-pound championship. Southwick was second-seeded.

Jamestown had four wrestlers place fourth and they were Nick D’Angelo (103), Cody Risley (113), Kyle Liuzzo (120) and Nate Somerton (195).

Cameron Weaver (126) and Mark Conklin (132) were fifth and Dakota Lewis (99) was sixth for the Red Raiders.

Eklum, Southwick, D’Angelo, Risley, Liuzzo, Somerton, Weaver and Conklin all advance to the University at Buffalo for the Section 6 state qualifier next Sunday.


EAST AURORA – Three wrestlers made the championship round with Tyler Furlow coming out with a title for champion Westfield-Ripley-Chautauqua Lake.

The second-seeded Furlow won the 170-pound title at the expense of Jake Bernstein of Lewiston-Porter, 15-4, as WRCL claimed the team crown with 205.5 points followed by Lewiston-Porter, which came in ranked No. 3 among small schools in Western New York and No. 7 in the state, with 200.5 points.

Furlow recorded a 3-0 record.

Caleb Lawson (160) and Trevor Enterline (220) were beaten in the final round for WRCL. Lawson was outpointed by Miguel Rodriguez-Spencer of Cheektowaga, 19-8, while Enterline, was pinned by Erik Feitshans of Alden in 1:41.

Third places went to WRCL grapplers Bryce Rowe (99), Nick Hudson (113), Kale Gilbert (138), Nick Zentz (152) and Cody Bird (195).

D.J. Hamrick (285), Jeremy Gilbert (145) and Damion Raynor (126) were fourth for WRCL and Roger Williams (120) and Nolan Hunt (132) came in fifth.

Andrew Shoners (113) of Lewiston-Porter was selected the Most Outstanding Wrestler.

The top four places advance to the University at Buffalo next Sunday for the Section 6 state qualifier.


LOCKPORT – Brothers Hector and Tito Colom recorded championships as Dunkirk-Silver Creek finished third at Starpoint High School.

Hector Colom was the winner at 99 pounds and Tito Colom the champion at 105 pounds as Dunkirk-Silver Creek had 148 points.

Lake Shore won the 11-team event with 214.5 points followed by Iroquois with 203 points, Dunkirk-Silver Creek, Hamburg with 143 points and Grand Island with 137.5 points.

Hector Colom nipped Tristan Alexander, 5-4, in the 99-pound championship and Tito Colom whipped Jacob Smeader of Hamburg in the 106-pound title match, 15-3.

Teddy Griewish (126) and Marquis Buchanan (182) received thirds for Dunkirk-Silver Creek. Griewish turned back Michael Hontz of Lake Shore, 9-0, and Buchanan took care of Zachary Whitney of Lake Shore, 5-2.

Kyle Perry (160) was fifth and Nick Jones (285) and Brandon Perry (113) were sixth for Dunkirk-Silver Creek.

Freddie Eckles (120) of Lake Shore was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler.

The Colom brothers, along with Griewish and Buchanan, advance to the state qualifying tournament at University at Buffalo next Sunday.
