Small Business Development Center To Help Startups

Do you have a great startup business idea?

If you do, one way of turning your idea into a reality could be to attend a business basics workshop. One is being sponsored by the Small Business Development Center at Jamestown Community College this week. The seminar will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at JCC in the Carnahan Center, room 123.

Beth Reed, Small Business Development Center adviser, said she will be hosting the seminar, along with Nick Ferrara, Small Business Development Center consultant. Those attending the workshop will learn about what resources are available to help plan a business. Also, startup tips to evaluate the feasibility of an idea, explore financing options, marketing and record keeping will be offered. A local entrepreneur is also scheduled to speak during the seminar on his business experiences.

”We’re trying to layout a lot of key considerations for people looking to startup a business or looking to expand,” Reed said. ”We will layout the tools for the feasibility of the startup or expansion idea. We will discuss cash flow, marketing analysis and startup scenarios.”

Reed said the workshops hosted by the Small Business Development Center are effective ways to publicize what the organization does. Since its start in 1986, the advisers at the Jamestown Small Business Development Center have worked directly with 10,078 businesses. During this time, center officials have helped to invest $103,538,171 in the area’s economy, which has created or saved 4,846 jobs, according to the organization’s website.

”A lot of people don’t know we exist,” Reed said. ”In the general public, there is a lack of awareness. Most people we do get are referrals from past clients. A lot of people don’t know this resource is out there.”

Reed said a couple times a year the Small Business Development Center hosts a business basics workshop. The organization also sponsors seminars on record keeping, income taxes, financing a business and how to use social media.

The business basics class fee is $10, and pre-registration is requested. Call the Small Business Development Center at JCC at 338-1024 to reserve a spot.
