Snowmobile Trails Could Re-Open This Weekend

Even with all the snow received Thursday night and Friday in Chautauqua County, snowmobile trails may not be opened today.

On Friday, Chris Jaynes, Chautauqua Lake Snowmobile Club president, said trails could be open today, but crews were still working to check on removing downed trees and repairing washed-out bridges.

”We really don’t have enough snow, yet,” Jaynes said about trail conditions. ”The snow we got turned into mud, in short order, because of all the water. It may take a day or two before we can open.”

Jaynes said with the previous snow melting and then it raining, conditions are not safe.

”It totally saturated the ground,” he said. ”A beaver damn overflowed in Sherman. We do have a go around if we need one. We need to look at bridges and see if trees are down. In Dewittville, we have 8 inches of snow, but fields have been blown dry.”

Jaynes said even if trails open this weekend, it will take a few days for quality conditions to return.

”If it continues to snow and be cold, it looks more like the following weekend the trails will be in better shape,” he said. ”Right now, they are hit-and-miss with the snow blowing around so much. It is hard to know what we have out there.”
