Margie M. Mitchell

EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio – Margie M. Mitchell passed away after an extended illness at the Adkins Convalescent Center in East Liverpool, Ohio, on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 30, 2013. She was 90.

She was born in Smiths Ferry, Pa., on Aug. 28, 1922, a daughter of the late William Lee and Olive Hanning Johnston.

She spent her youth in Ohio, and was a 1940 graduate of East Liverpool High School, and later attended Ohio Valley Business College.

On Sept. 15, 1943, she married Harold C. Mitchell, who was a pastor at various Free Methodist churches in Ohio, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, Maryland and Western New York. Mrs. Mitchell was a devoted pastor’s wife, until the death of her husband on Dec. 16, 1979.

She had served as a library aide at various schools in the areas where the family had lived, and after her husband’s death, she went to work for the Chautauqua County Social Services department. She returned to Ohio in the 1980s, where she was employed by the Columbiana County Department of Job & Family Services. Upon her retirement, she relocated to Gerry, N.Y. until 2010.

Surviving her are two sons: the Rev. H. Robert (Leslie) Mitchell of New Brighton, Pa., and Dennis Mitchell and his companion, Laura Hunt, of Cherry Creek, N.Y; along with a daughter, Janice Kelly and her husband, Philip, of East Liverpool. There are eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by an infant son, Wayne Mitchell; and a sister, Phyllis Torrence.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home in East Liverpool, Ohio, on Saturday, where the family will be present from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Carol Forsythe of the First Free Methodist Church will officiate.

Burial will take place at Calcutta United Presbyterian Cemetery.
