Roy K. Stewart
Roy K. Stewart, 88, of 4606 Independence Lane, Bemus Point died Monday, Jan. 21, 2013 in Jamestown, N.Y.
He was born March 10, 1924, in the town of Seneca, N.Y., the only son of the late Donald and Alta Kishlar Stewart.
Roy was a 1942 graduate of Bemus Point High School and was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mayville. He enlisted out of high school into the U.S. Army and served in the European theater during WWII in the Signal Corp. He lived and worked in the Bemus area as a construction contractor. He was a master craftsman who specialized in building new homes and also remodeling and repairing existing homes. As a man who found it difficult to stay still, he spent his later years building furniture and toys for his family members. He enjoyed family gatherings and camping and after retirement, he took up several new hobbies such as canoeing, sailing, biking, and family table games.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Josephine (Jo) Dewey Stewart; one son, Donald (Sandy) Stewart of Jamestown; two daughters, Cynthia (Terry) Taft of Carolina Shores, N.C., and Marlene (Doug) Sanders of Bemus Point, N.Y.; and one daughter-in-law, Ingrid Stewart-Fischer of Texas; and nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Also, stepchildren, Rick Lawrence of Vermont, Kelly Howe of Conn., and Michael (Dee) Lawrence of Charlton, N.Y.; eight step grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his former wife, Lois Guichard who died in 2002, and a son, Roy K. Stewart who died in 1971, and a stepson, Mark Lawrence, who died in 2005.
There will be a gathering for a Celebration of Life at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Bemus Point Library or a charity of one’s choice.
