Maple Grove Tops Wolverines In Battle Of Div. 3 Undefeateds

WESTFIELD – Maple Grove and Westfield entered Thursday night’s boys basketball game with a combined zero Division 3 losses. Something had to give.

That “something” didn’t give until the second half when Maple Grove (6-0, 10-1) went on a massive scoring spree en route to a 73-62 victory.

The Wolverines (5-1, 7-5) held their own in the first half, entering the break trailing 25-24.

“That was a perfect pace for us,” Westfield coach Bob North said. “If we could keep it in the 50s or low 60s then we had a chance. (Maple Grove) came out in the second half in a hurry. They got us running with them. They got about a six-point lead that they maintained.”

The Red Dragons scored 22 points in the third quarter before putting up a whopping 26 in the final eight minutes.

“The pace picked up in the second half,” North added. “We tried to slow them down a bit, but they went on a couple runs.”

Aaron Germain led Maple Grove with 25 points while Will Soffel added 18. The two combined to go a perfect 15 of 15 from the foul line.

“They shot the ball from the free throw line much better than we did,” North admitted. “We were only 50 percent from the line. In a game that’s close all the way through, you have to make your free throws.”

Jordan Imm was the leader for Westfield with 16 points and eight rebounds. Jon Coe netted 12, Jesse Rodriguez had 10 and Dan Tofil added another 10 to go with his team-high 12 rebounds.
