Icy Roads Cause Two I-86 Accidents; One Person Killed
Icy conditions are being blamed for separate accidents that have caused lane closures on Interstate 86 in New York’s southwestern corner, and authorities say at least one person had been killed in the crashes.
The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office says an accident occurred around 3 a.m. Thursday near Exit 6 in the town of Sherman in which one person was killed. A tractor trailer driven by Theon C. Nelson, 48, of Elyria, Ohio, jack-knifed and was then hit by a box truck that was unable to stop on the icy road. The driver of the box truck was killed. The driver’s name has not been released.
A stretch of I-86 from the Pennsylvania border to Sherman was closed in both directions after the crashes but the westbound lanes have since reopened.
State Police report two trucks collided in another accident near Mina.
A state police dispatcher says roads in the area were icy at the time of the crashes.
