The Boys & Girls Club of Jamestown has been selected to participate in the Major League Baseball “Wanna Play?” program in an effort to improve the overall fitness of youth.

The Wanna Play? program will encourage club members between the ages of 6 and 12 to realize the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and improved nutrition education and allow youth to become more health-conscious and active while learning the fundamental skills of baseball and softball.

Through the nine-week program, members will participate in a variety of activities and games to learn about ways to improve their fitness, nutrition and hydration; as well as learn basic baseball and softball skills and knowledge.

“The Wanna Play Program has been implemented in our general Club population and in our after school program,” said Mike Gerdy, Boys & Girls Club of Jamestown athletic director. “Members have participated in a wide variety of fitness and skill building activities and learned the basics of stretching, flexibility and baseball skills.”

The grant, sponsored through Major League Baseball in connection with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, allowed members to learn fielding, catching, throwing and hitting while seeing the connection of proper nutrition and fitness to overall success.

All programs at the Winifred Crawford Dibert Boys & Girls Club of Jamestown are sponsored, in part, by the United Way.
