Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down
Thumbs up to the gathering of eagles next Sunday at St. Bonaventure University as the local Boy Scout council honors this year’s clutch of Eagle Scouts. On this, the 100th anniversary of the Eagle Scout rank, the Allegheny Highlands Council will recognize 37 Scouts who have worked hard to earn this high honor.
Congratulations are also due to the adults who help guide these boys on their journey to becoming adults who will be active and contributing members of their communities.
Thumbs up to the Jamestown High School Red Raiders basketball team members as they meet stiff competition later today from the crack Williamsville North team. Whatever the outcome of what we all expect to be a great game, the Red Raiders are treating home town fans to quite a season. These young men have shown a lot heart and self discipline in putting in hours of practice and conditioning – the only route to a winning season.
A few weeks ago we gave Mother Nature a pat on the back for providing a white Christmas, and we repeat the sentiment in giving a thumbs up to the hearty snow cover that is warming the hearts of snowmobile enthusiasts. We note as well the annual weekend sleigh rides on the snow-covered streets of Chautauqua Institution get under way today and run every Saturday and Sunday from 1-3 p.m. through Feb. 24.
The rides on a horse-drawn bobsled last about 45 minutes, so you will want to dress for the weather and perhaps take a lap robe. The rides are $4 for adults and $2 for children under 12. Meet at the Chautauqua Bookstore, which is on the north side of Bestor Plaza. Take you camera, too.
We close with a thumbs up to the CNN reporter who demonstrated the sensibility of Lake Superior State University’s annual list of words and phrases that should be banned for misuse, overuse and general uselessness.
The CNN news reporter utterly lost her way in a forest of cliches when it seemed unlikely the House of Representatives would agree to a deal worked out New Year’s Eve between congressional leaders and the White House.
The fiscal cliff, she declared, was going to be kicked down the can.
And with that, we come to the end.
