Southwestern Tops Gowanda For First Division 1 Victory

Southwestern and Gowanda were locked in a dead heat most of the night, but the Lady Trojans turned on the jets when it counted in the final period to earn their first Division 1 win of the season, posting a 49-40 victory in girls basketball on Friday.

The Lady Panthers (2-7) got off to a good start with a four-point lead after the first quarter, but Southwestern (1-3, 3-6) battled back to trail by a single point at the half.

Things stayed even throughout the third quarter and well into the fourth before the Lady Trojans forced several turnovers and applied more pressure with four minutes left and outscored their opponent, 15-6, to pull away at the end.

Alex Sullivan had another big outing, drilling 27 points with seven steals for Southwestern, Jenna Yuchnitz delivered 12 points with eight steals and Emily Wuebbolt added eight points and pulled down seven rebounds.

Lexie Farner was outstanding for Gowanda with 20 points in the losing effort.

FALCONER – Dunkirk’s Khee Nance was the top shooter with 24 points and added 11 rebounds for the double-double, along with five assists, as the Lady Marauders (4-0, 6-2) cruised to a 65-36 win over host Falconer (0-3, 0-8).

Dunkirk jumped out to a seven-point lead after the first quarter, then turned up its offense with 25 points in the second to pull away.

Also for the Lady Marauders, Lacie Clark was on target with 17 points and nine rebounds, Selena Ruiz had four assists and Joyce Bomasuto had three assists.

For the Lady Golden Falcons, Alyssa Brooks led with 11 points, Emma Steele had eight points, five assists and two steals and Shannon Gunnell followed with seven points and 13 rebounds and Julia Anderson had four steals.
